President Jacob Zuma wished the nation's muslims well at the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan on Friday.
Ramadan is an annual observance set to the Islamic lunar calendar. It lasts a month and includes a fast of both food and drink from dawn until dusk.
Zuma said in a statement fasting teaches patience and dedication, while at the same time, it also enables one to feel and understand the plight of the poor.
