President Jacob Zuma has urged the public to work with authorities in bringing down crime and accident levels over the holiday season.
Speaking at the launch of a safety awareness campaign in KZN, Zuma said an estimated 14-thousand lives are lost on South Africa's roads every year, and that the carnage has to be stopped.
He said the estimated cost to the economy was 56 billion rand per annum but that the emotional loss to families was immeasurable.
Zuma said there would be more police patrols at all tourist destinations, especially at the coast and that the fight against crime during the festive season would extend to an anti-piracy and counterfeit goods campaign.
Late yesterday, the Road Traffic Management Corporation announced that some 592 fatal crashes had led to 710 deaths on South Africa's roads since the first of December.
