Zuma lists government achievements in state of the nation address

Zuma said the Special Investigating Unit was probing maladministration or alleged corruption in a number of government departments and state entities.

In the first six months of last year, the Asset Forfeiture Unit paid a total of R149 million into the Criminal Assets Recovery Account and to the victims of crime.

Zuma said this is 170% above its target of R55 million , and is higher than it has ever achieved in a full year.

He said fighting corruption is yielding results.

Meanwhile The Chamber of Mines says it accepts President Jacob Zuma's call for quick action to be taken on the living and working conditions of mine workers.

The chamber was responding to Zuma's state-of-the-nation address last night.

The president made an impassioned plea for mine owners and workers to work together to resolve their differences that had led to strikes on the country's mines.

He says strikes have had a negative impact on the country's economy.

Pausing to make the point during his last state of the nation address of his current term, president Zuma said mine owners care about their benefits and that the mines should operate and not stop.

He added that he also believed that any union leader who cares for the welfare of the workers, they must ensure that workers have good conditions of employment and decent wages, but he added that they must not lose jobs.
