Zuma elected president for a second term, and Baleka Mbete elected National Assembly Speaker

ANC national chairperson, Baleka Mbete was elected Speaker of the National Assembly on Wednesday, after 400 new MP's took their seats.

Former minister of Co-operative Governance, Lechesa Tsenoli was elected deputy-speaker.

Mbete defeated former Eastern Cape premier, and DA candidate Nosimo Balindlela by 260 votes to 88.

366 ballots were cast, of which 18 were spoilt.

Jacob Zuma was also re-elected as president in the National Assembly for a second term.

Proceedings slowed down considerably, after the DA forced a secret ballot by nominating Balindlela to challenge Mbete for the position.

While MP's from the ANC and opposition parties appeared eager to vote, the Economic Freedom Fighters abstained.

EFF leader Julius Malema did not get up to fetch his ballot paper when his name was called out to vote.

Instead, he shook his head, indicating he was not participating in the vote.
