A 15-year-old boy has been shot dead during a stand-off with police following an illegal drag racing event in Durban.
Colonel Jay Naicker says police were called out Saturday following complaints of people spinning tyres and drag racing at a taxi rank in Inanda.
He said that initial reports were that a mob of about 200 drivers and spectators attacked police.
Shots were fired and a 15-year-old boy was shot in the cheek.
The boy died from his injuries. Naicker did not say who fired the shots, but that the Independent Police Investigations Directorate had been called in to investigate and were at the scene Saturday night.
Naicker said the area was very tense and the Public Order Policing unit were keeping an eye on the situation.
