A young female pilot died after her Piper PA-25 single-seater aircraft crashed at Kroonstad on Wednesday.
Free State police spokesperson, Sergeant Josephine Rani, said the deceased was 22 years old and was completing her final assessment to become a crop-spray pilot.
She says the plane went down about 1km from the airfield, and "exploded on impact."
Rani says an inquest docket has been registered and the investigation continues.
Investigators from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have started the probe into the crash.
The deceased has since been identified as Corlia Strydom.
