A young mother, who admitted to stabbing her seven-month-old baby to death, has been sentenced to an effective six years in jail by the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Eighteen-year-old Nompumelelo Nyati said she had been abused by her dysfunctional family when her child support grant was not paid for three months.
Nyati killed the baby shortly after the child's father's family refused to care for the baby as she could not look after another child.
In sentencing her on Wednesday, Judge Thoba Dlwati said Nyati's conduct would not be tolerated as children should be loved and cared for.
Nyati was sentenced to 10 years in prison, of which four years were suspended.
