Woolworths defends its employment policy

Woolworths has asked for a meeting with the trade union Solidarity which has called for a boycott of the retailer.

This comes after Solidarity slated the company's employment policy following an advertisement for vacant posts where Woolworths stated that only Blacks, Indians and coloureds will be considered.

Solidarity said this constitutes unfair race discrimination.

Woolworths CEO Sam Ngumeni says it's a sensitive issue for them which they're willing to discuss openly with Solidarity.

"We have always been and continue to be committed to drive transformation in the workplace and we want to create an environment where our workforce reflects the diversity of the South African population. We do currently employ white people and will continue to employ white people, additional to that we have areas in our business where we lack diversity and in those areas we do designate roles and we have been transparent in our ads to make sure that people understand it when they apply for roles" Ngumeni said
