Woolworths beefs up security at KZN stores after bomb threats

DURBAN, July (ANA) -  South African clothing and food retailer Woolworths said that security had been beefed up at its stores, particularly in Kwazulu Natal, which have been the recent targets of bomb threats.

In a statement on Saturday, Woolworths Head of Divisions Kay Raidoo offered the assurance to customers that their safety was their primary concern.

The Hawks are investigating several incidents at Woolworths stores at two major shopping centres in Durban.

On Thursday the police bomb disposal unit was called in to search a Woolworths shop in the Durban city centre for evidence of another "bomb" after a staff member found a suspicious device.

"At this stage the motive behind these incidents is unclear and the investigation is ongoing. We continue to work closely with the relevant authorities, including the South African Police Service, the Hawks' crimes against [the] state unit, local and national government, as well as our own investigators who are providing input and guidance," Naidoo said.

She said additional uniformed security guards were placed at all stores in Kwazulu Natal while new search procedures were also instituted.
