Woman killed and shops torched in violent protests over power blackouts

Shops looted in Vosman

The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga has called for calm following incidents of violent protests at Vosman near Witbank.

A 50-year-old woman was shot dead during Monday's protests.

Allegations that the victim as well as two others were shot by police are now being investigated.

Police remain on high alert in the area with a preliminary report indicating that the incident follows power blackouts which were experienced in the area for the past weeks.

Spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, says protests in KwaGuqa Extension turned violent with reports of looting and torching of the Pick 'n Pay Shopping Centre in Extension 5.

A case of public violence has been opened and so far, two people have been arrested.
