Woman gets 15 years for smuggling explosives into SA

File

A woman caught with explosives at the Beitbridge Border Post has been jailed for 15 years in the Musina Regional Court.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Limpopo said it welcomed the conviction and sentencing of Mercy Rifundo on Wednesday.

She was arrested last August at the Beitbridge Border Post after officials found 590 blasting cartridges valued at R168 000 in her bag.

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation took over the probe and also established that Rifundo did not have the required documents to be in the country.

Police spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke, said Rifundo made several court appearances and remained in custody until she was convicted and sentenced to direct imprisonment.

She was also found guilty for contravening the Immigration Act and fined R20 000.00.
