Police have opened an inquest docket after a woman from Centurion died when her car went over the edge of the Hartebeespoort Dam.
A spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Craig Lambinon says their local unit and police responded to reports of a small passenger vehicle that had gone over the edge on Monday night with persons reportedly trapped inside.
He says they could see the car in the dam, submerged underwater.
Lambinon says rescue swimmers were deployed and an adult female, aged 29, was recovered and CPR administered.
He says sadly she passed away.
NSRI rescue swimmers continued to search for what they believed at that stage to be a baby that was missing.
Lambinon says no sign of a baby was found and it was later established that the infant was in the care of grandparents.
SAPS retrieved the vehicle from the water and handed over the body to Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
