Woman claims AWB was involved in Griekwastad murders

The National Prosecuting Authority says fresh allegations regarding the Griquastad triple family murder will have no bearing on the trial, which is due to resume in the Northern Cape High Court on Monday.

Mashudu Malabi was responding to a report that a right-wing female farmer claimed to be part of a "hit squad" responsible for the murders of Deon Steenkamp, his wife Christelle and their daughter, Marthella, who were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek outside Griquastad in April last year.

Cornelia de Wet, a member of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, reportedly claimed that she and three men were paid R100 000 for the hit, and said they were involved in other farm attacks.

Speaking from inside a Kimberley prison, De Wet implicated the owner of a security company as being the mastermind behind the attack, and claimed that he had initiated numerous attacks on white farmers in an attempt to instil a sense of fear and force farmers to make use of their security services.

She says the attack was also aimed at inciting racial hatred.

De Wet met yesterday with the defence team representing the teenager who is currently facing charges of murdering the Steenkamp family.
