Woman caught at OR Tambo airport with 11 rhino horns

JOHANNESBURG, July 26 (ANA) – A 24-year-old Chinese woman was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg for allegedly smuggling rhino horn, the ministry of environmental affairs said on Wednesday.

The suspect was en route to Hong Kong from Lusaka via Johannesburg and was arrested with 11 rhino horns weighing 23 kilogrammes on Tuesday, the ministry said.

The confiscated material will be examined to determine possible links with other investigations.

The woman will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa praised airport officials who apprehended the woman.

“The action of alert officials at the airport on Tuesday is to be applauded. It is a feather in the cap of all those investigators involved,” she said.
