Wits University has cautioned students that its rules prohibiting the cultivation and use of dagga on campus still stands.
The warning comes in the wake of the recent, celebrated landmark Constitutional Court ruling decriminalising the private use of dagga.
"The ruling is not prescriptive and the university retains the right to regulate activities within its precincts,” Wits cautioned in a statement on Tuesday.
The institution said that after a thorough consideration of the ruling by the university's legal advisors, it does not need to change its rules.
"For the avoidance of doubt, no part of the precincts of the university may be considered ‘private’ or a ‘private place’ for purposes of the use, possession or cultivation of cannabis," Wits said.
The Constitutional Court in September upheld a ruling by Western Cape HighCourt that the private use of dagga by adults is legal. The judgment emphasised private use only, ruling out public consumption and commercialisation.
