Western Cape ANC back Ramaphosa for president

Most African National Congress branches in the Western Cape came out in support of Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to take over as ANC president at the party’s elective conference in Johannesburg in December.

In a statement issued following the ANC’s Western Cape provincial general council (PGC) meeting called specifically to consolidate all the branch nominations for the national conference scheduled for December 16 to 20, the ANC said Ramaphosa had the backing of 121 of the 145 branch delegates present. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma received 23 votes.

Lindiwe Sisulu received 98 votes for the deputy president position, while 131 delegates backed Gwede Mantashe for ANC chairman. Senzo Mchunu garnered 113 votes for the secretary general position. Zingiswa Losi was backed by 60 delegates for deputy secretary general, and Paul Mashatile was nominated for treasurer general by 127 delegates.
