Weather system to move over EC on Friday - SA Weather Service

The SA Weather Service said that the anticipated approaching weather system was still on track to move over the Eastern Cape on Friday.

Garth Sampson at the PE Branch of the SA Weather Service said good rainfall, in excess of 20mm, is still expected along the South Coast region of the Eastern Cape and the adjacent interior between Plettenberg and Port Alfred, beginning Friday evening.

The heaviest rain will occur overnight on Friday and into Saturday morning.

Sampson cautioned that the predicted rain fall will not be enough to significantly influence dam levels or break the drought.

He also warned that areas recently affected by the devasating vegetation fires my experience runoff leading to mud slides and rock falls.

Fishermen and small craft are advised to seek shelter ahead of very rough seas and gale force south-easterly winds.

Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service has issued a warning of possible flooding in places over the eastern parts of the Eden District.

According to the weather service flooding is expected in coastal areas Friday night and Saturday.

Wouter Jacobs from the Eden Disaster Management Centre confirmed that they are on standby. He said that the Touw River, Swartvlei and Great Brak River estuaries were artificially breached as a precautionary measure.
