“We will not stand by while Buffalo City descends into anarchy" - DA MP

The Democratic Alliance appears poised to enter into the fray regarding land invasions in Buffalo City.

This, as attempts at an illegal land grab along the R72, just outside Cove Rock near East London, flared up again on Saturday.

East London police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said she was advised by police radio control that a group of people had once again started trying to erect illegal structures on the land.

She said Buffalo City law enforcement and police were on the scene.

There was a tense standoff on Friday between the authorities and a group of people accused of illegally invading the land in question after the Municipality obtained an interdict.

Meanwhile, DA MP, Kevin Mileham, called on Buffalo City and the Eastern Cape provincial government “to engage with communities and find a solution.”

“The BCM must urgently speed up its spatial planning and human settlements programs, to ensure that the need for residential accommodation is urgently addressed,’ He said.

“To this end, we will be seeking meetings with the relevant local and provincial departments, to determine how the needs of the community can be resolved.

Mileham said, “in addition, we will be corresponding with the provincial commissioner of the SAPS to request firm action against land invaders who do not comply with the law.”

“We will not stand by while Buffalo City descends into anarchy,” he said.
