Western Cape police said they have saturated parts of Nyanga in Cape Town with officers following a shooting at a taxi rank that left one person dead.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said the incident occurred at the Nyanga taxi rank on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was a “taxi security guard” who was killed during the shootout between members of “warring” taxi operators.
Potelwa said police confiscated 13 rifles and seven handguns, while 19 “security guards” are being questioned as part of the investigation.
A multi-disciplinary team was monitoring movements in close proximity to the taxi rank when shots were exchanged between the warring parties.
“As a result of the deployment, further shooting was averted,” Potelwa said.
Meanwhile, police have saturated the area and other hotspots with deployments as scores of commuters were left stranded as a result of the shooting.
The investigation is currently in the hands of the provincial taxi task team.
Potelwa said police were engaging with the Private Sector Industry Regulatory Authority, PSIRA, to determine the legality of the firearms and the security companies the guards work for.
