The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the death of a man in custody at the Belville police station in Cape Town.

IPID spokesperson, Grace Langa, said the incident allegedly occurred on Sunday night.

She said after police arrested a 27-year-old man for assault, he was handcuffed to “the burglar door” and left alone while police went to search for a second person linked to the same case.

Langa said when the police officers returned they found the man “hanged against the same burglar door with his body in a kneeling position.”

“It is alleged that he used a cord to commit suicide as his right arm was not cuffed,” she said.

Langa also cautioned against pressure from the community to speed up the investigation saying the family of the deceased deserve justice.
