The Hawks in the Free State announced on Tuesday that a warrant of arrest has been issued for ANC secretary-general, Ace Magashule.
Spokesperson, Warrant-Officer Linda Steyn said this related to the long-running investigation into the Free State asbestos audit contract awarded by the Provincial Department of Human Settlements.
She said the warrant of arrest was not served on Magashule but his lawyer had been informed.
He was warned to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of fraud and corruption.
Magashule is one of several people implicated in the R255m asbestos audit scandal.
He reportedly told the SABC that he was not aware of the warrant of arrest.
Last month, seven people, including well-known businessman Edwin Sodi, were arrested in different parts of the country.
They appeared in court in Bloemfontein on charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering and were all granted bail.
The ANC said in a statement that the party learned about the warrant of arrest for Magashule through media reports.
Spokesperson, Pule Mabe, said the Secretary-General would consult his legal team on how best to respond to the developments.
He said Magashule had stated on more than one occasion that he would co-operate with any process undertaken by law enforcement agencies.
Mabe said the ANC would be monitoring developments closely.
