The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has arrested three South Africans as part of an international operation to trace manufacturers, users and distributors of child pornography.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says this is the seventh person arrested in the country since November last year.

She says one of the three men in custody posed as a teenager to lure underage girls to a chat group where child pornography was distributed and shared.

Brigadier Mathe says a 32-year-old man from Mitchell's Plain was found to be chatting to girls where nude pictures were exchanged and he was arrested on 19 January.

She says 48 hours before his arrest DHS captured two more men in the Cape Town Area.

Brigadier Mathe says on the 17th a 53-year-old man from Worcester was the first to be arrested and he has so far been found with 95 000 images and 6 000 videos of child pornography.

She says the second arrest was a 40-year-old man from Kraaifontein found with more than 149 000 pictures and 5 000 videos.

Mathe says he also had two unlicensed firearms and ammunition in his house as well as nine snakes of which three did not have a permit.

All the men will face various charges related to child pornography when they appear in the various courts in their jurisdiction.

SAPS urged parents to monitor their children's devices, especially their social media accounts.

No woman, especially children should ever upload sexually suggestive images of themselves on the internet nor reveal personal information about themselves, especially where they go to school.
