The National Sea Rescue Institute in Cape Town had an unusual call-out this morning - to evacuate a woman in labour from Robben Island.
The NSRI's Craig Lambinon says a volunteer sea rescue duty crew from Table Bay was alerted by the Transnet National Ports Authority shortly after 3 o'clock on Tuesday morning.
Lambinon says staff on Robben Island reported that their colleague, a 35 year old woman from Delft, in Cape Town, had gone into labour and needed hospitalisation.
"Accompanied by an EMS paramedic the NSRI responded to Robben Island, the patient was taken on board, made comfortable and taken to Table Bay. On arrival she was transferred into a waiting EMS ambulance and transported to the new Somerset Hospital Maternity ward" Lambinon said.
