Unprotected Numsa strike to blame for latest blackouts

Eskom has implemented Stage 4 load shedding until midnight.

Spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantshantsha says this is due to the ongoing unprotected labour action by employees affiliated with the metal workers union, Numsa.

He says this is a precautionary measure to preserve emergency generation reserves.

Mantshantsha says Saturday and Sunday, Stage 4 kicks in from 5 am through to midnight on both days.

Eskom is appealing to striking employees to embrace the higher purpose of putting the people of South Africa first.

He called on the Numsa members to respect the law and desist from illegal and undemocratic conduct.

Eskom is offering a wage increase of 4.6% to all employees.

This was rejected by Numsa stating that the Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) was currently sitting at 6.5%.
