Unions reach agreement with two gold mines

Gold producers Evander Gold and Village Main Reef have reached a wage agreement with the National Union of Mineworkers and the United Association of SA.

The Chamber of Mines says early settlements indicate that constructive outcomes could be reached.

The Chamber's chief negotiator in the gold wage talks, Elize Strydom says the settlement reached by these companies was an eight percent increase in basic wages for category four and five employees, including rock drill operators.

However, the National Union of Mineworkers says the settlement was mine-specific and does not change the dynamics of the strike at other mines.

Meanwhile, The Chamber says most gold mines have been severely affected by the sector strike.

Gold producers' representative Charmane Russell says less than 20 percent of the work force has arrived for shifts at the affected mines since the strike action started on Tuesday.

She says only six out of 23 listed mines were fully operational.

Russell says the strike action could result in daily losses of millions of rands if all production was halted.
