JOHANNESBURG, October 12 (ANA) – The Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training body, Umalusi, said on Thursday that drastic measures would be taken against anyone found guilty of any irregularities.
“We want clean and flawless examinations,” CEO of Umalusi, Dr Mafu Rakometsi, said during an assessment of the state of readiness of the 2017 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
As many as 634,814 full time candidates will sit for the 2017 NSC exams at 6,844 venues around South Africa.
The examinations will begin on Monday, 23 October 2017, with 112,164 of the candidates being from Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal having 169,023, the highest number of learners.
Rakometsi said that following the paper leak in Limpopo in 2016 the board was extra vigilant to ensure that a similar incident was not repeated.
The board said provinces and centres that had security issues during security checks would be revisited to ensure that changes were made.
In 2016 that a Grade 12 mathematics examination paper was leaked to learners in Giyani, Limpopo, before it was written. The year before, a life sciences exam paper was leaked in Limpopo despite security measures that were said to be in place.
“The system is improving and it’s not where it was in the past,” Rakometsi said.
This week’s storms in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal had presented an unexpected challenge. The CEO said that the rains had “changed the game” in terms of their preparation in affected areas.
“I’ll be issuing a letter to each province requesting them to give information on which examination centres were affected.”
