Uitenhage police have arrested a 35-year-old bank teller on charges of fraud and theft.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkholi, said the woman was arrested at her home in Rosedale on Monday morning and was later released on bail of R600.

The arrest was made by members of the Uitenhage Cluster Commercial Crimes task team and forensic investigators and followed a month-long investigation into several “improper transactions” which occurred between August 2019 and May 2020.

Nkohli said it is alleged that the teller had“targeted the bank accounts of elderly people”, most of them pensioners, stealing around R210 000.

“A case was opened after bank authorities became suspicious,” he said.

The woman will appear in court on Wednesday, facing 25 counts of fraud and six counts of theft.
