Two truckers arrested at border post with smokes, creams and antihistamines

Two suspects were arrested at the Groblersbridge Border Post outside Lephalale on Tuesday for trying to smuggle illicit cigarettes and medicine into the country.

The suspects aged 37 and 46 attempted to cross the border from Botswana on Tuesday night in two trucks carrying loads of copper.

Law enforcement officials deployed at the port of entry conducted a thorough search of the trucks and found goods to the value of nearly R3 million hidden inside.

The cargo contained over a thousand cartons of cigarettes, 32 400 tubes of vanishing cream (skin lightening cream) and 120 000 antihistamine tablets called Cyproheptadine.

The total value of these items is estimated to be worth R2.66 million.

The two men were due to appear in the Phalala Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of smuggling illicit cigarettes and contravention of the Medicine and Related substance control Act.
