Democratic Alliance leader, Helen Zille says one party taking a two thirds majority at elections is unhealthy for a Constitutional democracy.
She made the remark after President Jacob Zuma on Sunday called for the African National Congress to get a two thirds majority in next year's elections.
Zille says in a democracy, the two biggest parties should be "roughly evenly balanced" to keep the government on its toes, knowing it could be voted out of office.
She says the DA would like to bring the ANC below 60 percent, which it considered healthier.
Meanwhile President Jacob Zuma launched the party's election campaign over the weekend, defending the ANC's track record, and shot down criticism. He says next year's national elections are in the hands of the ANC's volunteers
He said it was not about the noise people make about the problems in the country, but the policies of the ANC that take the country forward..
