SANParks says two rhino paching suspects were shot dead in Kruger National Park last night.
"In a follow-up anti-poaching operation in the eastern boundary of the Kruger National Park last night, Wednesday, 11 January 2012, Field Rangers came in contact with a group of suspected poachers," SANParks GM: Media Liaison, Reynold Thakhuli, said in a statement this morning.
He says a shoot-out ensued between the rangers and poachers. During the confrontation, two suspected poachers from Mozambique were fatally wounded.
Thakuli says the follow-up operation was conducted as a result of the discovery of eight rhino carcasses, which were found on Tuesday.
He says a 375 rifle and other hunting equipment were discovered. An aerial search is being conducted today to determine if any rhino had been lost.
"SANParks regrets the death of the suspected poachers, but would like to request the public to assist the police and SANParks with any information which may lead to the arrest of more would be poachers," Thakhuli said.
