The South African National Defence Force has confirmed the deaths of two soldiers in a mortar attack in the turbulent east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tuesday’s attack left 20 other soldiers wounded.
South African troops have been deployed in the DRC as part of a Southern African Development Community force helping the government put down a rebellion.
The attack comes amid calls by the South African National Defence Union on the SANDF to provide more information on the loss of life and injuries sustained by South African soldiers stationed in the DRC.
One South African soldier was killed in the region in May, and another two in February.
SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said the injured soldiers were admitted to hospital.
"Four members who were critically injured have been hospitalised, whilst the rest who suffered minor injuries are expected to be discharged soon.
"Families of the two members who lost their lives have been informed, and all procedures to bring their mortal remains are in process.
"The names of the deceased will be communicated in due course."
