The Department of Correctional Service has launched a manhunt after two sentenced prisoners escaped from the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Tshwane.
The escapees are Thabo Muyambo from Mozambique who was serving a life sentence for 21 counts of various crimes including rape, robbery, and kidnapping.
The other escapee is Zimbabwean, Johannes Chauke, who was serving 20 years for housebreaking offences.
The Department provided no details of how they were able to break-out but said an internal investigation is also underway.
“The Emergency Support Team from Correctional Services working closely with the South African Police Service are hot on their heels and these escapees shall be brought back behind bars,” the Department said in a statement on Wednesday.
