Two people have died and 32 hospitalised after taking an unidentified drug

The consumption of an unidentified drug at a party that left one school pupil and an adult dead has prompted KwaZulu-Natal’s social development MEC Weziwe Thusi to call on parents to keep a close watch on their children.

Ncumisa Ndelu, spokeswoman for the department, said on Wednesday that, apart from the two who died, a further 32 people, mostly school children were admitted to hospital over the weekend.

It is understood that they were holding a party to celebrate the end of term.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said that two inquest dockets, for a 19-year-old and a 29-year-old, had been opened at the KwaMashu police station.

“Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” he said.

Ndelu said that social workers were visiting the families of those involved in the incident.

Thusi said: “I wish to call on parents to take note of strange behaviours in their children and seek help before it is too late. I would also like to caution young people against drug-induced fun, it leads to tragedy as we have witnessed in this case.”
