Two killed in shootout following robbery in Pretoria suburb

Two people were killed and a third injured in a shoot-out in Pretoria’s Elarduspark suburb, police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said that the two – a security guard and a robber – were killed in a shoot-out after a group of five men broke into a residence in a complex.

The five robbers managed to enter one of the residences by forcing a sliding door open. Once inside the residence, they tied up a woman demanding money.

Her son, however, managed to escape and alerted security personnel who converged on the residence where a shoot-out ensued.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said that one of the men had died before paramedics arrived at the scene while the critically wounded security guard died despite the best efforts of paramedics.

Dlamini said a second robber was wounded and taken to hospital under police guard. Three of the robbers managed to flee.

Police seized two unlicensed handguns, balaclavas and hand gloves at the scene.
