Two people were killed and about 54 injured when a petrol tanker crashed into scores of vehicles in Alberton, south east of Johannesburg.
Netcare 911 spokesperson, Santi Steinmann, says their paramedics as well as other emergency medical services are still on the scene.
She says at this stage unconfirmed reports state that 47 vehicles, including two heavy vehicles, were involved in the crash.
Seventeen people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious and were transported to various hospitals after receiving medical treatment on scene.
The road will remain obstructed for the scene to be cleared.
