A pilot and his student were killed after their Robinson R22 helicopter crashed into the Umgeni River in Kwazulu Natal on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority Kabelo Ledwaba says their Accident and Incident Investigations Division was notified about the accident on Monday morning and investigators were dispatched.

He says at this point they have no further details on the accident but a preliminary report will be issued within 30 days.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), who responded to the scene, the chopper crashed in overgrown vegetation next to the Umgeni River below the N2 before the Inanda Road offramp.

Due to the location of the crash site, Rescue Technicians utilised boats to cross the river to reach the aircraft.

The two men were declared dead by paramedics on the scene.

The names of the deceased have not yet been released.
