Counterfeit money confiscated from a flat in Upington

SAPS

Two people are in police custody after counterfeit money worth nearly R2 million was found in their flat in Upington in the Northern Cape.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela says they received a tip-off on Monday and immediately took the necessary steps to search the premises.

He says during the search counterfeit money amounting to R1 864 200.00 was confiscated including $2 900.00 in US dollars worth about R55 000.

A 55-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were arrested and will appear in the local magistrates court soon.

Sergeant Masegela urged the public to familiarise themselves with the new banknotes.

Any information about counterfeit banknotes can be reported anonymously or at the nearest police station.
