Two in court for Durban pitch invasion

Two people will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today following the violent pitch invasion at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

The suspects, aged 27 and 33, were allegedly among those who stormed the field after Kaizer Chiefs lost their Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against Free State Stars.

Several security guards were assaulted in the melee, while other angry supporters lit fires inside the stadium, damaged TV equipment and vandalised property.

SAPS spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala said the suspects face charges of public violence and malicious damage to property.

Meanwhile, stadium management says 18 men were hurt during the pitch invasion. 12 people were treated at the stadium while the others were taken to hospital.

Stadium management denied that a female security guard was among the injured.

The cost of the damage is still being determined.
