Two men are due to appear in court this week for being in possession of abalone valued at about R700 000.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, said they were arrested near Riversonderend on Monday morning.
A member attached to Riviersonderend SAPS was on patrol when he became suspicious of two men in a white Hyundai vehicle.
“He followed it and stopped the vehicle in town. After the vehicle was stopped, the member approached it, introduced himself, and saw black bags at the back of the vehicle.”
Van Wyk said he searched the vehicle and found nine black bags containing unshelled abalone.
“The value of the 900 units of abalone is approximately R700 000.00,” he said.
Two suspects, aged 27 and 54, due to appear in the Caledon Periodical Court on Wednesday.
