Two arrested for 2019 Stellenbosch wine estate murder

File

Western Cape police said two suspects were arrested for the murder of 62-year-old Stefan Smit on his wine estate in Stellenbosch in June last year.

Western Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Andrè Traut, said detectives descended on the residences of three suspects in Bellville South, Milnerton and Wynberg during the early hours of Wednesday morning, where search warrants were executed.

"Two male suspects aged 50 and 56 were arrested and are due to make their court appearances in Stellenbosch tomorrow (Fri) to face the murder charge against them," Traut said.

However, he said a third suspect, a 54-year-old female, managed to evade arrest and the search for her is underway.

Traut said Smit was shot and killed in front of his wife and a family friend when armed suspects entered their residence through an unlocked door at their Louiesenhof Wine Estate.
