Twin sisters, aged just three years old, died when a school bus travelling between Warden and Harrismith on the N-3 in the Free State, inexplicably burst into flames causing the driver to lose control on Friday.
Netcare 911 said when paramedics arrived on scene they found that the bus had veered across the road and came to rest against an embankment.
Spokesperson, Chris Botha, said that "Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire service arrived at the scene and found the bus engulfed in flames."
"Two people were found to have sustained critical injuries while four was in a serious condition, seventeen others sustained minor injuries"
He said medics treated the injured at the scene before they transported them to various hospitals in the area for the care that they required.
Botha said when firefighters extinguished the blaze they found the bodies of the two little girls in the charred bus.
The cause of the fire will be the subject of an investigation.
