RUSTENBURG, February 5 (ANA) – At least 20 people have been arrested following a violent protest in Itsoseng near Lichtenburg, North West police said on Sunday.
“The suspects were arrested on Friday and Saturday following days of violence-marred protests that erupted at Itsoseng township near Lichtenburg earlier this week due to [an] alleged shortage of water in the area,” Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said.
Violent protests flared up on Wednesday and at least six shops were looted in zones one, two, and three.
Eleven of the 20 people were arrested for public violence and nine were arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods.
All the suspects, aged between 18 and 64, were expected to appear in the Itsoseng Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The situation was quiet in the area on Sunday afternoon, but police maintained a presence, he said.
