Tributes streamed in on Wednesday for Human Rights Lawyer, George Bizos, who has died at the age of 92.

News of his passing was tweeted by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, which said that it was saddened by his passing.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said the passing of George Bizos is a sad moment for the country, saying that he will forever be remembered for his contribution to the attainment of democracy.

Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, said Bizos’ “fight for democracy and human rights will not be forgotten and his legacy will live on through his many good works which continue to today.”

The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution, Casac, said he was a lawyer who dedicated his life and skills to defend human rights and secure and deepen democracy.

During his illustrious legal career, Bizos represented former President Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu in both their treason and Rivonia Trials.

He also represented the families of the slain anti-apartheid activists, Matthew Goniwe, Fort Calata, Sparrow Mkhonto and Sicelo Mhlauli, during the judicial inquest into their deaths which was held in Port Elizabeth.

Bizos also represented the families of struggle heroes at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
