Transnet Engineering to deliver trains to Zimbabwe in R2bn deal


Transnet said on Tuesday it would on Friday deliver the first locally built mainline locomotives, wagons and passenger coaches to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) in a transaction valued at over R2 billion.

The company said its Transnet Engineering subsidiary, led by chief officer for advanced manufacturing Thami Jiyane would deliver the trains at a ceremony in Zimbabwe's second city of Bulawayo at a ceremony to be attended by the country's president Emmerson Mnagangwa and transport minister Joram Gumbo.

In a deal to revive Zimbabwe’s strategic industries, Transnet Engineering has been appointed to supply 24 locally manufactured locomotives, 10 new locomotive shunters and 13 refurbished shunters, 200 general purpose wagons, 768 wagons to be refurbished and 162 passenger coaches.
