Police in North West are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a young girl died when a train smashed into the bakkie she was travelling in.
Medics from ER24 were called out to a farm road crossing in Syferbult between Derby and Magaliesburg on Monday afternoon.
Spokesperson Russel Meiring says when they arrived on the scene community members had already pulled two girls and a man from the bakkie but an 11-year-old girl had already succumbed to her injuries.
He says another 17-year-old female and a 40-year-old man sustained numerous injuries and are in critical condition.
The patients were treated and provided with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
Nobody on the train sustained any injuries.
The circumstances that led to the crash will form part of the investigation.
The name of the deceased is not yet known.
