Toy-gun robbers sentenced to 15 years each

Three suspects who robbed a motorist in Johannesburg have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each.

Police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, said on Tuesday that Sibusiso Mazibuko, 33, Thabiso Masungwini, 32, and Mahlomola Direko, 35, were last week found guilty for armed robbery and sentenced to a collective 45 years by the Johannesburg District Court.

Mbele said each accused was sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment and were declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“On the 22nd of September 2016, at 19:00, three suspects robbed a 32-year-old male. Victim was stationary in the red robot at corner Bree and Simmonds, driving a Ford Focus, copper in colour. His window was wide open when three suspects confronted him. One of them pointed him with a firearm and they took his cellphone.

“Police in civilian clothes apprehended suspects while the crime was in progress. Cellphone of the victim and a firearm used in the commission of the crime was recovered from them.”

Mbele said the firearm recovered turned out to be a toy gun.
