Tourist evacuated from cruise-liner

An elderly American tourist is recovering in a Mossel Bay hospital after being evacuated from a cruise liner after he apparently suffered a stroke.

The NSRI said the evacuation was carried out on Friday night by their Mossel Bay crew supported by Western Cape emergency medical services.

The 73-year-old American man was a passenger on the Seven Seas Explora.

NSRI Mossel Bay station commander Andre Fraser said that they began preparing for the evacuation after the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) had been alerted.

At the time, the ship was about two hours from Mossel Bay. Its last port of call was Cape Town and it was heading to Port Elizabeth.

Fraser said the man was in a serious but stable condition.
