Seven classrooms at one of the best schools in Mpumalanga has been destroyed after it was struck by lightning on Thursday.
The Baberton Secondary School, with about 800 students, is largely attended by children from rich families from the area.
A Spokesperson for the Department of education in the province Jasper Zwane says a technical team was sent to the school at Umjindi in Mbombela to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the fire.
Sakkie Dednam from a security company in the area told the local newspaper that the top floor of the school was struck by lightning at about 2 am.
He says due to the electric fire caused by the incident the cables burnt causing the upper floor of the school to burst into flames, while the lower floor was filled with water.
