Three transport unions end long-running strike

The SA Transport and Allied Workers Union says violent strikers who killed a Cape Town truck driver do not belong in the labour movement and should face the full might of the law.

Satawu spokesperson, Vincent Masoga, says they will cooperate with the police investigation.

Forty-one year old truck driver Gary Stewart was declared brain dead after being hit on the head by a stone thrown at his vehicle last Wednesday.

He had been on life support with a fractured skull and severe brain damage.

Meanwhile, three unions representing truck drivers called off their strike on Tuesday ahead of further talks with the Road Freight Employers' Association.

The Association says they were advised that the three unions had called off the strike in light of a double digit wage offer from employers.

The Transport and Allied Workers' Union, the Professional Transport Workers' Union and the Motor Transport Workers' Union, who together claim a 15 000 membership, say they will suspend their strike at 4 pm on Tuesday.

The 28 000 members of the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union will however continue their strike.
