Three suspected criminals were on Tuesday fatally wounded and three others arrested in a shootout with an integrated law enforcement multi-disciplinary team at Chrisville in Booysens, south west of Johannesburg.
Spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said intelligence-driven information was received which prompted an operation by members of South African Police Service’s Crime Intelligence HQ, Gauteng Traffic Saturation unit, DPCI Tactical Operations Management Section, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, and several private security companies.
The team received information on suspects who have allegedly been terrorizing a number of Johannesburg suburbs committing violent crimes and are allegedly responsible for over thirty murders.
Colonel Mogale said upon receiving the information, it was operationalised and when law enforcement arrived at the identified premises, they were met with fire.
“The team returned fire and in the ensuing shootout, three of the suspects were fatally wounded and three others were apprehended.
“Two unlicensed firearms were recovered from the scene,” Colonel Mogale said.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon whilst the investigation continues.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation said it did not rule out the possibility of more suspects being arrested and linked to more crimes.
